Lieutenant Michael Heiny

 

Lieutenant Heiny graduated from the United States Naval Academy in May of 2003 with a BS in Computer Science. After selecting submarines as his service selection he attended Navy Nuclear Power School and the Nuclear Prototype Training Unit, both in Charleston, SC. He also attended the Submarine Officer Basic Course in Groton, CT prior to reporting to his first sea duty assignment, the USS Alaska SSBN 732 (Blue Crew) stationed in Bangor, WA. On board the USS Alaska LT Heiny served as the Main Propulsion Assistant as well as the Reactor Controls Assistant. In June of 2006, he was offered the chance to split tour and serve aboard the USS Ohio SSGN 726 (Blue Crew). On board the very first SSGN, he served as the Assistant Operations Officer. In July of 2007, LT Heiny volunteered to serve as the Electronic Warfare Officer to the 1203rd Engineering Battalion, in Balad, Iraq. While in Iraq for 9 months, he served as the technical expert for all Electronic Warfare to the 1203rd, including Anti-Radio-Controlled Improvised Explosive Devices (RCIEDs). LT Heiny is qualified as a Navy Nuclear Engineer and his personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and the Army Commendation Medal.
